Hello!
My name is Túlio Zille, and I will be the International Studies program intern for the academic year of 2007-08. I am particularly interested in
social change and justice. I decided to focus my studies on the marginalized areas of the world, specially Latin America, where I am originally
from (Brazil). Latin America is a region that has recently gone through major economic reforms, which were responsible for accentuating social
disparities to unacceptable levels. Nonetheless, people are resisting, through marches, protests, social movements and organizing, and their
experiences bring to us strong messages of hope. The two main disciplines of my concentration are Political Science and Sociology; however, I have
also taken classes in Geography, History, Economics, Hispanic Studies, and Latin American and Latina/o Studies as part of my major.
Studying abroad is an important component of the IS program.
During the fall semester of 2006 I had the chance to spend five months in Argentina. Living there for a semester was a very meaningful experience.
Argentina has a strikingly unequal social reality. Poverty has escalated due to the recent economic crisis that hit the Southern American cone in
the turn of the century. The necessity of social change has given room to the rise of new social movements (and growth of preexisting ones) with
very interesting experiences, which I had the chance to see closely and learn much about. It was through the International Studies program that I
have learned to put these local experiences into the global context.
As the intern, I am glad to assist prospective majors with the application process, which I am very familiar with. I am also available to answer questions or take suggestions to the International Studies program from both majors and non-majors of every class year. Please contact me for my up-to-date office hours in New England building.
