
Professor
of Political Science, Stephen R. Rock received his Ph.D. and Master's
in Government from Cornell University in 1985 and '82 respectively,
after earning his A.B. in Political Science from Miami University
where he graduated summa cum laude in 1979.
Professor
Rock joined the Vassar faculty in 1987 after a term as Research
Fellow of the Avoiding Nuclear War Project at Harvard University's
Center for Science and International Affairs. He teaches courses
on International Politics, U.S. Foreign Policy, Defense Policy and
Arms Control, and Theories of War and Peace, as well as a senior
seminar on selected topics in International Conflict and Cooperation.
Dr. Rock serves as Chair for Vassar's Department of Political Science,
and is a member of the International Studies Program and the Committee
on Curricular Policies
Dr. Rock's research interests include the causes of peace, democratic
peace theory, and the efficacy of inter-state influence strategies,
especially deterrence and appeasement.
